Ate: April 30, 2006 Published: April 30, 2006 $$ We had such a good meal last week that we tried out another restaurant with "California" in its name. In this case, we went a little more low-key and casual, deciding to check out Ultimate California Pizza. With all of their locations around here, a person can be forgiven for thinking that they are a chain. But no, Ultimate California Pizza is one hundred percent locally owned and operated. We visited their location on the corner of 25th Avenue and King's Highway. Decorated in a hip, industrial theme with stark, minimalist d←cor and brushed metal tabletops, the restaurant strives to provide a sophisticated "California" atmosphere for its patrons. You can go to any pizza restaurant and get a pizza with all of the classic toppings, and the pie you get at most of those restaurants will be pretty good. But how many places can you go and get your pizza topped with smoked Gouda cheese, artichoke hearts, fresh spinach, Thai peanut chicken, walnuts or Cajun blackening seasoning? In their commercials, Ultimate California Pizza bills itself as "the perfect pizza picky people love." The two of us are pretty picky, so we figured that we were the perfect people to put their catchphrase to the test. Our meal began with an order of their Tijuana Flat Bread, which arrived looking round, flat and pizza-like. Topped with lettuce, tomatoes, cheese, chicken and jalapeno peppers, it is probably best described as a taco in pizza form. It even came with a bowl of salsa for dipping. Hot, savory and spicy, the flat bread made for an excellent opening course, whetting our appetites for the upcoming main dish. The main dish was called the Big Kahuna, what they bill as their "Monster Everything Pie." It came loaded up with five meats, five vegetables and three types of cheese. Just because the pizza came with so many different toppings, they didn't use that as an excuse to skimp on any of them, or on the sauce. Each slice was downright heavy with its load of toppings. Thank goodness we only ordered the medium, because I don't know whether or not we could have lifted the large slices. Even with just the medium pizza, we ended up taking half of our dinner home with us. Like any other good pizza, it was still excellent toasted up for lunch the next day. With good food and reasonable prices, Ultimate California Pizza is one place that we can recommend. In addition, their salad and personal pizza lunch deal is one of the better options in town for a quick break in a busy day. Lunch or dinner, this is good food. |
