Brand new and open just in time for the Harley riders' Fall rally, The Philly House is in a prime location on King's Highway for both tourist and local traffic. The two of us have driven by the building and seen the sign, so we were looking forward to trying the restaurant when it opened. This weekend was our chance.

With a name like The Philly House, one can pretty much guess what we went there for, but cheese steaks turned out to only be one small part of a broad menu. This is a place where you order and pay at the counter, and we quickly discovered that they have a one-dollar surcharge for use of credit or debit cards. Pay cash if you can.

Our first introduction to this restaurant's food was their iced tea. We rarely mention the iced tea, unless it is particularly good or particularly bad. In this case, unfortunately, it was the latter. It had a severe, bitter aftertaste like it had been sitting around for a while. This, combined with the dollar surcharge, had us grumbling a bit while waiting for them to call our number.

To try a couple of different things, we'd decided to get a cheese steak and a small pizza and split the two. One of our first reactions was that it seemed like a relatively small amount of food for the price. The cheese steak, the thing you would expect to be The Philly House's flagship item, was nothing special. The two of us have definitely had better at other restaurants around the Grand Strand.

To us, the pizza was actually better than the cheese steak. It came loaded down with lots of good toppings and dripping with cheese. Based on our reaction, they might want to consider marketing their pizzas more than their sandwiches. The pizza had a lot more zing and depth to it.

Overall, The Philly House was an okay place to have dinner. But even before the credit/debit-card surcharge, the price seemed a bit high. If you're in downtown Myrtle Beach and you want a place to have a good pizza, you can enjoy one at The Philly House. Just plan on paying for the convenience.
