TBonz Gill & Grill

After a long Thanksgiving weekend, the two of us were exhausted and just wanted to relax and close out our holiday weekend quietly and with a good meal. We stayed in the heart of Myrtle Beach tourism along the Highway 17 Bypass and went into TBonz Gill & Grill. As you would expect from their name, TBonz specializes in meat and fish, and a little carnivore action sounded good to us tonight.

Most everyone around the beach was apparently just as tired from the holiday as we were, and TBonz wasn't very busy this evening. We took a seat in the nearly-deserted bar and soon discovered that the same low-energy apathy also extended to the staff. Our obviously bored waitress took our order with all the enthusiasm of someone whose pet had just died.

Our starter was their Waccamaw seafood dip and it eventually arrived. Fortunately, it was hot when it did get to the table. The gooey mix of crab, shrimp, spinach, roasted red peppers and lots of melted cheese made an excellent start to our dinner. We scooped big, dripping chipfuls of the dip and devoured them. Despite the half-hearted service, the seafood dip was an excellent beginning to our dinner.

And then. . . nothing happened. For quite a while, nothing happened. Finally, the waitress/bartender got a break from not serving the nonexistent other customers and managed to get around to bringing our dinner. My wife had decided to continue with seafood and ordered the Market Street chicken & shrimp sandwich. According to her, the shrimp on the sandwich were good, but that's where her praise ended. The chicken breast was so dry and tough, she couldn't bite completely through. She had to clamp down with her teeth and tear the meat away. The smoky jalapeno cream sauce didn't complement the sandwich at all. In fact, it was actually rather bland - not what a spice-lover like her had hoped for.

My own peppercorn steak burger was equally disappointing. The peppercorns encrusting the meat were good and bursting with flavor. Unfortunately, they were the only thing on the burger with flavor. The beef was way overcooked and dry. Even large amounts of ketchup couldn't save my burger. It was truly one of the least enjoyable burgers I've ever bought in my life.

We had plenty of time to contemplate our unsatisfying dinners while we sat there waiting for the waitress to bring us our check. The service just seemed to get slower as the evening wore on. It's possible that we just hit TBonz Gill & Grill on a bad night. Maybe the service anywhere along the beach would be just as painful on the Sunday night after Thanksgiving. But the food at TBonz sure didn't impress the two of us enough to make going back there a priority anytime soon.
