When most people think about going down to Murrells Inlet for dinner, the restaurants on the Marsh Walk are usually the first thing that springs to mind. But there's a lot more to Murrells Inlet than that. Plenty of restaurants dot Highway 17 as well. One that has been around for at least twenty years is T-Bones Steak House. It may be longer, but my wife remembers it being there at least as far back as when she was a teenager.

One step inside, and you can tell that this is a place that markets eclectic Americana and takes its atmosphere seriously. The walls are festooned with classic road signs, NASCAR and football memorabilia, and lots of neon. The classic rock and oldies playing over the speakers add a nice touch. All of it keeps you looking around to check things out for a while after you get seated.

This evening, we decided to try out an offbeat appetizer with an irresistible name. Their S.O.B. (South Of the Border) Pizza is a tortilla topped with bacon, tomatoes, spinach and cheddar cheese. But as we dug into the dish, we could tell that it wasn't hot and straight out of the oven. It had been sitting in the pass for a while and was just lukewarm. It was just okay, not anything spectacular or memorable for anything other than being average. Our salads followed shortly and were somewhat better than the pizza, but again most notable for being generic.

For the main course, my wife went with a twelve-ounce chopped steak. It arrived topped with big chunks of bell pepper and onion, and accompanied by home-cut fries. Her report on the meal was not encouraging. In her words, it was kind of bland. Once you got past the salt and Texas Pete hot sauce she sprinkled on the surface, and down into the meat itself, there wasn't a lot of seasoning or flavor. It was like they had taken plain meat and put it on the grill without adding anything to spice it up. I tried a couple of bites. She was right, there wasn't a lot of flavor to it. The fries, at least, were good and crisp, not limp the way most home-cut fries usually are.

Even though we were at a steak house, I decided to go with a chicken dish instead. Their Austin chicken is a barbecued chicken breast smothered with cheese, bacon bits and chopped onions. As with my bride's dinner, I have to report that my entrée was also just mediocre. Run-of-the-mill ingredients and not a lot of seasoning made this dinner one that was filling and okay tasting instead of something that could have been wonderful.

The level of service we received matched the quality of our dinner. It was okay, but nothing special or warm. We're a bit sad to report that T-Bones Steak House is basically just a tourist attraction with a lot of eye candy that also happens to serve food. With it's casual atmosphere and heavily marketed kitsch, the kids will love it. If you want quality time with your family while you're here on vacation, T-Bones is a place to go. But locals and those wanting a good, flavorful meal will find themselves out of luck.
