Sea Captain's House

For decades, the Sea Captain's House has served up seafood on the seashore. It has enjoyed a reputation as a high-class, elegant restaurant that serves some great seafood. This is no fried everything, all-you-can-eat buffet. There are already enough of those places along the beach. Having eaten there before with family on special occasions, we decided tonight to go and have a quiet, romantic dinner for two.

In the heart of north Ocean Boulevard, the Sea Captain's House is just what the name describes. It's a stately old 1930's beach house that has been running as a restaurant for more than forty years. The two of us arrived for an early dinner seating, so we were lucky enough to get a great table by the window. It was a cloudless evening and the spectacular view of the Atlantic Ocean put us in good spirits. Throw in a friendly, prompt waitress and our evening was off to a great start.

The restaurant has their regular menu and the nightly specials. We dipped into the chef's specials for our appetizer. The baked crab imperial was fresh out of the oven and loaded with crab. The outer crust gave way to a soft, creamy mixture inside. From the description on the menu, we were expecting a consistency similar to a crab cake. We got something that was much better. The chef didn't skimp on the crab one bit. Along with the dish came a remoulade sauce that mixed well and added an extra tang to the taste.

Our entrees arrived shortly after we finished our salads. Wanting to build on our crab appetizer, my wife had ordered the low country crab casserole. With plenty of cheese and eggs to go with the crab, the casserole was similar to a quiche. Like the appetizer, the chef did not skimp on the crab in this meal either. My bride also had high praise for the broccoli that accompanied her meal. According to her, it was well cooked and well seasoned, not limp and boiled to death. Since broccoli and I are not on speaking terms, I'll just have to take her word for it. However, I can say that the few bites I tried of her crab casserole were excellent.

My own dinner was a white wine seared salmon filet topped with a red pepper basil cream sauce. With an entrée description that sounded that good, how could I refuse? Never before in my life has a piece of salmon melted in my mouth like this one did. When I would eat a bite that didn't have any sauce, I could taste the flavor of the wine the fish was cooked in. With the sauce, the flavor was rich and almost decadently creamy. The vegetables were crisp and the potato was tender, but it was all a framework meant to showcase the wonderful salmon.

After an appetizer, salad and entrée, we should have been full. But in a Homer Simpson-esque moment of weakness, I ordered a slice of their chocolate hazelnut cheesecake (mmmmmmm - cheesecake). So I could pretend that it was for the two of us, I had the waitress bring us two forks. I'd thought that the salmon melted in my mouth, but it had nothing on this cheesecake. The taste was amazing, making the perfect end to a wonderful dinner.

After exhaustive research, the two of us can safely conclude that the Sea Captain's House continues to deserve its reputation. The price of the meal is high enough to make this a place for special occasions, but unlike most expensive restaurants, we came away feeling like we got our money's worth. They don't take reservations or do call-ahead seating, so you might want to get there early. Even on a Sunday night in the off-season, the restaurant was pretty close to full when we left.
