Santino's Pizza

During this off-season, the two of us haven't exactly had stellar success when going to the big high-profile tourist places. For this week's review, we decided to see how far we could get away from them. We got away indeed - all the way out to the town of Aynor on Highway 501. Aynor is a place that is slowly transforming from a low-country farm town into a bedroom community for the beach's workforce. Right on the highway, holding its own against all of the fast-food joints that festoon the highway, is an inviting, homey-looking restaurant called Santino's Pizza.

Within a few seconds of walking into Santino's, we could tell it was a family place. Most of the tables in the small dining room were occupied by families. We placed our order at the counter, sat down at one of the few empty tables, and enjoyed the pleasant energy we felt. There was a lot more hustle than we expected. Along with the people sitting in the dining room, we saw lots of people picking up their take-out orders. Apparently, a large chunk of western Horry County was eating dinner from Santino's this Friday night.

Our subs came out hot and fresh, with the bread perfectly toasted. My wife's steak sub was full of meat and vegetables. The steak was tender and the peppers and onions were still a little crisp. She didn't say much while she was eating, but the look on her face told me she was enjoying it. My own sub was their super combo sub that came with ham, turkey, roast beef, diced bacon and cheese. For no extra charge, they'd added jalapeno peppers to my sub. They packed a heat that went perfectly with the meat and cheese. These were wet, messy subs. Mine left me with mustard and oil dripping all over my hands. We didn't try any of Santino's namesake dish, but if their pizzas are as good as the subs we ate, then they are mighty tasty indeed.

When we got up to go, the place was more crowded than when we got there. We left there with our bellies and our wallets full. We'd thoroughly enjoyed our dinner and hoped it would set the tone for the rest of the evening. Obviously, anyone who reads our column and lives anywhere near Aynor already knows about Santino's Pizza. But for those of us who live at the beach, and for those who pass through Aynor on the way to the beach, Santino's Pizza is worth stopping in for a relaxing meal. Even if you're just passing through, you're on a schedule and don't have time to stop, Santino's makes a good take-out option.
