Saint Angelo IV Pizza Shoppe

We had such a good time at an upscale Italian restaurant last week that we were still in the mood for more Italian food this week. But this time, we were more interested in having a fun, casual lunch instead of a fancy dinner. Great pizza places are one of the things that makes Myrtle Beach a great place to live, and everyone has their opinion of which place is best. Following the advice of a couple of friends, we traveled down to Surfside Beach and pulled into the Saint Angelo IV Pizza Shoppe.

Saint Angelo is every bit the epitome of the family-run neighborhood bar and restaurant. You can tell that is has its share of locals who are regulars, but we were also able to spot a few out-of-towners too. It was a beautiful day, if a bit chilly. The sun was shining brightly and it seemed to match the bright, friendly atmosphere inside the restaurant.

Instead of a big meal, the two of us had ordered a lunchtime assortment of munchies. One of the things that we noticed on the menu was a lunch-sized pizza with four toppings for $5.99. We ordered one of those pizzas and a dozen hot wings. As seems to be a recurring theme in our reviews, we didn't realize until our food came, just how much food it would be. A certain national pizza chain likes to market their lunchtime personal pizza, and theirs lives up to the "personal" moniker. Saint Angelo's lunch-sized pizza was easily twice as large as the national chain's personal pizza. When coupled with twelve sizeable wings fresh out of the oil, it all made for a very large lunch.

Fried to perfection, the wings were still juicy, steaming and would have tasted good by themselves. The sauce was thick and really clung to the meat, which usually means there is lots of butter in it. I'm sure you readers have probably figured by now that we love butter, so their wing sauce was a big hit with us. We had ordered our wings hot, and they definitely had some heat, but not overly so. If that's still too much heat for you, they do have milder flavors.

As I've already mentioned, our pizza was bigger than we expected. The topping amounts were similarly oversized. All four of our toppings were very well represented on each slice. The weight of the toppings almost made this "knife and fork" pizza, but the crust was just stiff enough that you could eat it with your hands - the fun, messy way. Our friends who had recommended that we try Saint Angelo were right on the money. This was great pizza.

We didn't have any pressing schedule, so we enjoyed a leisurely lunch without watching the clock. Saint Angelo is the perfect place for that. There's no reason to hurry out the door. You begin to believe that you can relax for a few more minutes, that the world will survive without you while you recharge your batteries a bit more.

The price of our meal was just as nice as the meal itself. The two of us ate a huge lunch for well under twenty dollars. You won't find too many places on Business 17 where you can get that much great food for that little money. If you're down around Surfside Beach, Saint Angelo IV is worth a stop in for a good, relaxing meal.
