Ate: April 15, 2006 Published: April 16, 2006 $$ It was the day before Easter and families had been streaming into the Grand Strand area for the past eight days, jamming the roads and crowding all of the restaurants in and around Myrtle Beach. On a weekend like this, the two of us decided to do the wise thing and get off the beach in search of a less crowded alternative. We found that alternative up in Conway at the Riverwalk Grille. Unfortunately, most people only think of Conway as the last town they drive through on the way to Myrtle Beach. But Conway has a rich history and is actually hundreds of years older than the oceanfront resort towns. In recent years, Conway has undergone the same explosive growth as the rest of the coast. That includes a shiny new county courthouse and, right next door, the equally new Riverwalk Grille restaurant. As soon as we walked in, the two of us could feel the friendly, low-key, relaxed atmosphere. This is not a place where they stand on ceremony or formality. With dish names like "Court Room Burger," "The Jury" and "The Judge," it isn't hard to tell that this is a restaurant who knows whom their day-to-day clientele are and caters to them. I'm willing to bet that they do a bang-up lunchtime business with everyone who works at the courthouse. As an appetizer, we started off with their Riverwalk Dip, a mixture of ground beef and sausage and chopped mushrooms and onions, all mixed together in a cheese sauce and served up with tortilla chips. The dip made for a good starter and had just a hint of a zing to it. The bowl of dip looked small, but somehow, they packed a lot of dip into the bowl. We weren't able to finish all of it before our meals came. My wife had ordered The Prosecutor. What she got was a big, thick burger with grilled onions, mushrooms and Swiss cheese, with a heaping helping of fries on the side. I didn't try any of her burger, but according to her, it was hot, juicy and everything you expect a good burger to be. The fries were crispy and fresh out of the oil, not at all mealy or mushy like the fries at many other restaurants. As much as I love a good burger, I decided to go for a little twist and order their cheeseburger wrap. The wrap consisted everything you would want in a cheeseburger (including jalapeno peppers at my request), all wrapped up in a tortilla, also accompanied by my own heaping helping of fries. A cheeseburger wrap was definitely something different, but it worked for me. I thoroughly enjoyed both my wrap and as many of the fries as I could comfortably eat. Whether you are in Conway for business, are passing through while going to or from the beach, or just want to get away from the beach crowds, the Riverwalk Grille is a good place to stop in for a relaxing meal. The food is good, the service is friendly and the prices can't be beat. |
