Ate: November 2, 2006 Published: November 5, 2006 $ If there's one thing that most of the beach residents have known for years, it's that River City Café is where you go to get a good burger in a casual environment. When talking about River City, "casual environment" means they have license plates on the wall, peanut shells on the floor and classic rock on the sound system. The locations that dot the beach are almost as much of an institution as the sand and the ocean. Even on a chilly weeknight in November, the River City Café on 21st Avenue was still doing a pretty good business. They have a long list of burgers available, from just a plain burger to the Tex-Mex with chili, jalapenos and cheese and everything in between. They even have one topped with peanut butter. I don't know anyone who's ever tried it, but it's always been on the menu, so I guess enough people do to keep it there. Burgers are River City's mainstay, but they also have other good sandwiches like a reuben or a fried bologna. You can also find seafood baskets and salads there too, so even picky eaters should be able to find something on the menu. We split an order of bacon cheese fries with out burgers. Fries have never exactly been River City Café's strongest suit, and we have to agree that this evening's were weak. They've engaged in some cost-cutting portion control. In addition, the bacon was overcooked and the fries were greasy and soggy. These were definitely not the stuff of an institution. Thank goodness that their burgers made up for the fries. My wife got the aforementioned Tex-Mex burger and I got what they call a "Black 'n' Bleu," cooked with Cajun seasonings and topped with huge crumbles of bleu cheese. These are not neat, clean burgers you can eat with one hand while driving. These are big, messy things that require a lot of napkins (or, in River City's case, paper towels) and are well worth the mess that gets made. My wife's burger was loaded down with jalapenos and chili. She really didn't describe it very much, she just smiled, gave me a look and said, "Mmmmmmmm." Or at least I think that's what she said. I wasn't paying close attention, I was too busy enjoying my black 'n bleu burger. When we left River City Café, the place was still jumping. Obviously, their status as a local institution isn't in danger of going anywhere anytime soon. While their fries have begun to suffer a bit, their burgers are still the best on the beach. As a bonus, River City is also a wonderful place to kick back, relax with your buddies and enjoy a beer with your burger. |
