We went a long way out of our usual territory this weekend - all the way up in Little River, just a little bit shy of the state line. Pat & Mike's Irish Pub has been a mainstay in Little River for well over ten years. This evening, we decided that it was high time the two of us make the trek northward and check this place out.

While Little River may no longer be the "sleepy fishing village" that the town's marketing puts forward, Pat & Mike's is in an unassuming building that harkens back to those days. The atmosphere and friendliness of the staff had the same unassuming feel, and we were comfortable as we sat back, relaxed and enjoyed the view of the pond out back.

"Irish Pub" notwithstanding, Pat & Mikes serves up a variety of good American appetizers. We went with the classic ranch style cheese fries, and they arrived on a big, heaping plate. The huge mounds of cheese were melted to that perfect point where it was all gooey without being too runny. The two of us enjoyed them immensely and they were devoured in short order. Our only nit-pick is that the large quantities of artery-clogging cheese and bacon could have used a little more ranch dressing to go with them.

My lovely wife got their Sullivan's chopped steak, and was immediately a bit put off that the egg noodles mentioned in the menu had been replaced with potatoes. It also came with just a small dollop of gravy on her steak, which was fortunately easily remedied by our very pleasant waiter. In her opinion, it was worth it to hold out for the extra gravy, since it was made with Guinness beer and retained a lot of its rich flavor. Everything was well cooked and my wife enjoyed her hearty dinner.

My shepherd's pie didn't have any of the mini-drama that my wife's dinner had. It arrived exactly as the menu described. Well seasoned and well cooked, it was a nice helping of comfort food. The vegetables inside weren't cooked to mush, so they still had a bit of crispness to them. It was a good dinner and between it and the appetizer, I should have taken half of it home for a leftover lunch. But no, I made a pig of myself and ate the whole thing.

Pat & Mike's Irish Pub isn't the kind of place you go for a light meal. The menu is chock full of solid, hearty meals that were perfect for a cool early fall evening. The friendly staff is professional but still helps to create a casual comfortable atmosphere. Whether you're with a group of golfers, a family on vacation, or a local looking for a place to go with your sweetie, Pat & Mike's is a great place to visit.
