Ate: July 12, 2006 Published: July 16, 2006 $$$ For whatever reason, the two of us haven't gone off the beaten path in a while, and we still didn't go off it this week. We acted like tourists and drove along King's Highway to see what struck our fancy. After discussing a few places that caught our eye, we decided to stop into the whimsically named Noizy Oyster Saltwater Caf← and have dinner. The Noizy Oyster is located a few blocks south of the Pavilion but still in the thick of the action. By this fact alone, they are guaranteed to get plenty of drive-by traffic. This is a restaurant that brings to mind the classic small beach town seafood shacks that are disappearing way to quickly around the Grand Strand. Based on the way they are set up, the Noizy Oyster looks to be about half restaurant and half bar. Since we were there in the middle of the week, they were serving mostly restaurant patrons this evening. On the weekends, however, I'd be willing to bet that they have a somewhat different crowd. Probably our biggest clue to that effect was the t-shirt worn by our waitress. On the back, in big letters, it declared, "Shuck me! Suck Me! Eat Me Raw!" We got their crab dip as our appetizer. One thing we didn't like was that our appetizer was brought out at the same time as our main courses, so our dinners were getting cold while we tried their crab dip. It wasn't just one case of mistiming that only affected us. We watched as a family of four received their appetizer, salads, crab legs and seafood platters all at once. Our crab dip was decent, but didn't really impress us in any way. My wife was able to really taste the thyme in the dip, so she didn't much like it for that reason. For myself, I was disappointed that, though you could see bits of crab and shrimp in the dip, you couldn't taste either one. All the two of us could really taste was cheese, cream and thyme. Though the Noizy Oyster has seafood dishes, including classic fried seafood platters, the two of us had decided to just get sandwiches. My bride got the grouper sandwich and I went with the shrimp. When they came to our table, my manhood felt a little threatened. My wife's grouper was a big, long sandwich served on a sub roll. My own shrimp sandwich was only half the size and served up on a round hamburger bun. Since she had more than enough to share, I tried a bit of my wife's sandwich. I have to admit, the grouper was fried very nicely and was moist without being greasy. It was the best thing I ate all evening. As for my own sandwich, the shrimp were good, but without some melted cheese or a good thick sauce to hold the bundle of shrimp together, they didn't want to stay in the bun. Every time I picked it up to take a bite, I had to pick up one or two shrimp that had fallen out and stuff them back in. I would have been better off just getting a plate of fried shrimp. When we left the Noizy Oyster Saltwater Caf←, we were quite full, but not very fulfilled. The staff was nothing but friendly and the atmosphere was enjoyably casual, but the food didn't live up to our expectations. We got the distinct impression that they are more interested in being a locals' hang-out bar than they are being a tourists' restaurant. If you want a laid-back bar, go here. If you want a place that is serious about serving good seafood, this isn't it. |
