Inlet Crab House

For some reason, I was in the mood for seafood this evening. I wanted something better than our last unspectacular seafood outing. So my bride and I drove down to Murrells Inlet and cruised their strip of restaurants to see which one struck our fancy. We both noticed the little nondescript building among the larger, flashier or more upscale restaurants. With a little hope and curiosity, we pulled into the Inlet Crab House.

At a glance, it was obvious that we'd gotten lucky in at least one respect. Though it is a fairly new establishment, Inlet Crab House is one-hundred percent classic low country seafood shack of the type that is disappearing far too fast from the Grand Strand. It was dinnertime and there was a good crowd and a light atmosphere, everyone as happy to be out of the brutal heat as to be eating.

Since both of us were in the mood to make pigs of ourselves, we ordered an appetizer that cost as much as a lot of the entrees. Their seafood sampler is exactly what the name says it is. We got a huge plate of four things: fried shrimp, calamari, grouper bites and crab balls. Every bit of it was excellent. The crab balls kind of reminded us of hush puppies, but with a lot of crab in them. Our favorite, though, was the grouper bites. They were large chunks of fish fried with a light batter. Still moist, they were placed at the bottom of our sampler platter so that they would stay hot. We can't say enough about how good this sampler was.

Following our mound of seafood came the sandwiches, both accompanied by a whole lot of fries. The crab cake in my wife's sandwich was as big around and thick as a large hamburger. However, this is the point where our meal took a turn. My wife described her crab cake as mushy and doughy. I ate half of her sandwich and I had to agree with her. It didn't live up to the expectations set by the crab balls in our appetizer. We tasted a lot more dough than crab.

I had been feeling adventurous and I ordered a different kind of sandwich than I normally would. In doing so, I discovered that I don't like softshell crab. Nope, not one little bit. I apologize that I can't give an objective review of my sandwich. It was probably a decent softshell crab, but I just didn't like it. For those of you who were wondering, this is why I ate half of my wife's sandwich. For what it's worth, I can give an honest assessment of the fries. They were your basic, garden variety, frozen bagged fries.

Our dinner experience at the Inlet Crab House ran hot and cold tonight. Our sampler platter was worth the trip to Murrells Inlet, some of the best seafood we've had in quite a while. But their sandwiches didn't hold up. Come enjoy the casual atmosphere and great seafood at the Inlet Crab House, just steer clear of the sandwiches.
