We got away from the beach again and went inland a few miles. We drove up highway 544, but didn't quite go all the way into Conway this time. We stopped a few miles short, pulling into the small shopping center that houses a restaurant called Top Ten Breakfast and Burgers. We were happy to get away from the early summer crush of tourists along the beach, and were hoping to get a good, low-key meal in the process.

We stepped inside to get out of the heat and with one look, it was obvious that Top Ten is a place that has been decorated to the whimsies of the owner. One wall is festooned with pictures and records of musical groups from the 60s and 70s. The other big wall is dedicated to NASCAR memorabilia from it's glory days in the 70s and 80s, back when NASCAR still acknowledged its moonshine-running roots and was proud to partner with a tobacco company.

A couple of carnivores like us quickly smiled when we got a look at Top Ten's menu. As the restaurant's name implies, their main emphasis is burgers and other similar sandwiches. They offer burgers topped with a wide variety of things ranging from the standards like mushrooms and chili to less common items like bleu cheese and Cajun seasonings. You can even get one topped with peanut butter, but I don't think either one of us will be trying that one anytime soon.

The two of us decided to start off with a healthy appetizer, so we went with their Rock and Roll Fries. It is an order of their fries topped with cheese, bacon, ranch dressing - and chicken to make it "healthy." The people at Top Ten were very generous with their toppings, and they clung to the fries in thick clumps. They were devoured quickly by these two hungry patrons. Thank goodness they had chicken on them, so they weren't bad for us.

Our burgers were massive pieces of beef nestled under mounds of toppings. Both of us marveled at how thick and juicy our dinners were. These are definitely not clean, neat burgers that you can eat with one hand. These are big, messy affairs that drip juice and require a lot of napkins. There is no standing on ceremony at Top Ten. You just dig in and eat, pausing occasionally to come up for air and wipe your mouth. As you can guess, we both enjoyed our burgers. My wife did have one small nit-pick about her mushroom and Swiss burger. She would rather they use fresh mushrooms instead of ones from a jar.

My own burger was a little more off the beaten path. I had gotten their Hawaiian burger, which came with ham, a pineapple ring and two different kinds of cheese. I'd never tried a burger like that before. The sweet, tangy pineapple went surprisingly well with the rest of the burger. I might have to try that again sometime, maybe with jalapenos. If I had to offer my own nit-pick, It would be that the slice of cheese right next to the pineapple slice didn't melt. But just like my wife, I'm only picking a small nit on a large, juicy burger.

The menu at Top Ten Breakfast and Burgers is reminiscent of the menu at another local restaurant, but the food at Top Ten tastes a lot better. I think that a few others have figured that out as well, because some of the people we saw in there appeared to be fellow beach residents who had come inland to enjoy an excellent burger. If that's what you want, the drive to Top Ten is worth the trip.
