We didn't realize how long it had been since the two of us had gone up to North Myrtle Beach for a review. Looking back, we realized that it was high time we rectified the situation, so we headed up north and scouted around until we found a place that looked interesting. We found ourselves stopping off for dinner at Flynn's Irish Tavern on Main Street.

The word "tavern" notwithstanding, Flynn's is definitely much more restaurant than bar. It is very tastefully decorated with lots of rich woods, and the walls are festooned with plenty of memorabilia from Ireland and New York City. Everyone, including some of the patrons enjoying the fresh air on a patio table, was friendly and greeted us as we came in. We felt right at home, not like some interlopers up from the south side.

We were both pretty hungry this evening and our meal started off with an appetizer of homemade chips and a horseradish ranch dip. We were served a massive bowl of hot, thick-cut potato chips. Most of the chips were large and all of them were crispy. There was just enough grease in them to make them delicious, without being too much and making our fingers greasy or the chips soggy. Our only nit-pick about our appetizer was that it was an awfully small bowl of dip for such a big bowl of chips.

My wife's dinner was a hamburger steak, fries and Guinness gravy. And yes, when I say Guinness, I'm talking about the beer. I tried a couple of my wife's fries with the gravy, and you could really taste the Guinness in it. The beer gave the gravy a unique, very distinctive flavor that really made it stand out from the crowd. Her hamburger steak was also good, very juicy and tender.

I had ordered the Irish lamb stew. It came as chunks of lamb and beef mixed together and served up in a sizable bowl with carrots and potatoes. On the side, Flynn's had thoughtfully provided some hearty poppy-seed rolls to absorb all of the wonderful juices that were in the stew bowl. One thing that struck both of us was the amount of meat in my dinner. The vegetables were almost a side item in the stew.

We both enjoyed our dinner this evening. There wasn't anything fancy or overdone about our meals. It was solid comfort food and the two of us made pigs of ourselves. We were stuffed when dinner was over, but nobody was complaining. If that's the kind of meal you want to enjoy while you're in town, Flynn's Irish Tavern is a good place to enjoy it.
