Ate: September 15, 2006 Published: September 17, 2006 $$ Last week, we felt a little let down by going to a big tourist-marketed place that was long on kitsch and short on meal quality. We decided this time to go a bit less high concept, looking instead for the kind of place that could be called a locals' favorite. We found Fat Jack's Wings & Things down in Surfside Beach. With a name like that, we couldn't resist. We pulled in and went inside. We walked in and immediately felt comfortable. The decorated ceiling tiles, the paper towel rolls mounted by each booth, and everything else just screamed out "local." We could tell that this is a place near and dear to the hearts of a lot of Surfside Beach residents. They welcomed us into their home turf with open arms. We didn't stand on any sort of ceremony or regular meal progression tonight. Instead we got a big sampler-style platter with two appetizers and three types of wings. The two of us switched off between the different items, washing them down with beer (me) and iced tea (my wife). On a Friday evening after a long week, this was the kind of low-key dinner that hit the spot. But as nice as everyone was and as good as everything was, I'm sorry to have to report that it wasn't great. The best thing on our tray was the Texas gold wings. The other two types of wings didn't have much zing to them. They were cooked well and were crispy, but the sauces left a little to be desired. My ranch dressing was a good accompaniment, but my wife's bleu cheese was watery and had a funny taste to it. As much as we enjoyed the atmosphere and the crowd, we're actually a bit sad that we didn't find everything completely wonderful. We left Fat Jack's full and in a good mood. We had eaten a good meal, we were just sorry it wasn't a great one. |
