Tonight, we decided to do something a little different. After working hard all week, we did what a lot of people do when they're exhausted. Whether you're a local or you're here on vacation, there's nothing wrong with a little take out. Tonight's take out was from a place called Empire Chinese Restaurant down in Surfside Beach. My wonderful wife called it in and then picked it up on her way home from work before coming home to a leisurely Friday night.

Empire fits the definition of a classic Chinese take out place right down to the little white folded boxes. Their menu selection is very diverse, with plenty of things for everyone to choose from. There is even section for healthy dining options and another for things like plain old fried shrimp and french fries (for the kids). When presented with a menu as vast as Empire's, it is tough to make up your mind. The two of us simply did what any rational adult would - we ordered way too much food so we could try a bunch of different things.

We got two different chicken dishes. Their Kung Po Chicken was good and spicy with crisp vegetables and crunchy peanuts. Although I had to pick around the mushrooms, it was an effort I was willing to make in order to enjoy the rest of the dish. My wife enjoyed it too, including the mushrooms. According to her, this one was her favorite dish of the evening. The General Tso's Chicken had been lightly fried with a good thick sauce that clung to the chunks of meat. We could have eaten a lot more of both of these dishes, but we still had two others that we wanted to try.

Our boneless spare ribs were good and meaty, with just the right amount of pork fat to enhance the flavor. The sauce on the ribs had a bit of sweetness to it without going overboard. Our final dish was the Beef with Garlic Sauce. Again, I had to pick around a vegetable and again, it was worth it. Even with the broccoli, this was my favorite dish. Like the Kung Po Chicken, this dish also came with a lot of good crisp vegetables.

Throw in mounds of fried rice and some crispy egg rolls, and we had ourselves a big mound of food, with lots of leftovers. It is just the two of us, be we could have easily fed a large family some really good food for not a whole lot of money. Instead of a lot of people, we're instead going to feed ourselves for a few meals. I am happy to report that we've already found out that our dinner from Empire Chinese Restaurant makes for excellent lunchtime leftovers.

Whether you're exhausted from a long day of work, golf or sightseeing with the family, and you want take out with a much better taste than you average Chinese buffet, the Empire Chinese Restaurant in Surfside Beach is an excellent bet.
