Ate: December 16, 2006 Published: December 17, 2006 $ The newest personality on the Food Network states that you can often find really good mom 'n' pop restaurants in a strip mall because the rent is fairly cheap. Not being ones to argue with the experts, we took the same approach this week. After two reviews of varying satisfaction in Myrtle Beach's high-profile, tourist driven restaurants, we ventured down south to a strip mall by the Wal-Mart in Surfside Beach. In these humble digs, we found Dough Boys New York Style Pizzeria. The setting isn't plush, but it is comfortable, homey and the smell is good enough to make your mouth water when you walk in. While we were there, the place was doing a brisk lunchtime business with employees and shoppers from the nearby mega-superstsore. And like most of the others here for lunch, we weren't in a position to linger and have a long meal. We skipped any appetizer and went straight for a pizza. If this had been dinner, we might have gotten their medium pizza, but a small was plenty for lunch. Even for two big eaters like us, Dough Boys' small is a full twelve inches wide and big enough to satisfy our appetites. Of course, it was their meat-lovers pizza, so there were toppings aplenty for us to enjoy. They were very generous with their toppings, putting a lot more on their small than I have seen on some large pizzas that we've gotten from the national chains. We had places to be, so we didn't stay long. But we left full and very happy. The two of us had just enjoyed plenty of excellent pizza and soft drinks for twenty dollars. Dough Boys New York Style Pizza is one mom 'n' pop restaurant that far outshines the larger and flashier competitors up and down the Grand Strand. |
