Ate: November 17, 2006 Published: November 19, 2006 $$ The two of us went up to North Myrtle Beach this evening to enjoy a little live music, so we thought that while we were up north, we would use the opportunity to review a restaurant at the same time. The sign out front of Crawdaddy's had a picture of a shrimp wearing a tuxedo and top hat while holding a martini glass, so we were expecting it to be some sort of trendy place that catered to upscale golfers. Boy were we wrong. Crawdaddy's is a casual, local bar & grill - the type of place more likely to be favored by locals who want to get away from the trendy, upscale golfers. As locals ourselves, we happily walked in. Crawdaddy's is obviously the type of place that has a loyal band of regular clientele, but that didn't stop them from welcoming us warmly as we sat down. Since we were in a laid-back place with no pretensions, we ordered a dinner that fit. Our starter was their loaded potato, thick-cut potato wedges that were deep fried and smothered with cheese, bacon, onions and tomatoes. Tender and steaming hot, they went perfectly with the ranch dressing that accompanied them. The wedges made a wonderful opening to our meal. The enjoyable evening continued with our main courses. My lovely bride had ordered their shrimp basket. She got a basket full of classic low-country fried shrimp, breaded with flour and golden fried in a way that is fast becoming a disappearing art along the Grand Strand. The shrimp were served up with a pile of fries and made for some very tasty old-school Myrtle Beach comfort food. My own dinner was a thick, juicy cheeseburger that was cooked wonderfully. The outside was seared and crisp, while the inside was still just a bit pink. This was a full-sized, two handed burger that required plenty of napkins to wipe the juice that dripped all over my hands. Like my wife's shrimp basket, my burger came with its own mound of fries. Both of us were full and satisfied by the time we were done with our meal. While we relaxed and enjoyed our dinner, we watched a steady, growing stream of regulars stopping in for a couple of drinks or a meal. We were in a good mood and, had we not had somewhere else to be that evening, might have stuck around for the karaoke later that evening. But we had places to be. We paid our tab and went back out into the night with a happy feeling not just from a good meal, but also from the way that the friendly staff at Crawdaddy's made us feel at home. |
