Ate: May 13, 2006 Published: May 14, 2006 $$ After going into the heart of Myrtle Beach's tourist district last week and getting our hearts broken with bad service and bad food, we decided that this week it would be better to go to a small neighborhood restaurant. Neither one of us had been to Athens Pizza in many, many years (since, in fact, long before we met), so it was like a brand new restaurant for us. They have recently remodeled and doubled in size, so we wanted to check out the food that's fueling their growth. Athens Pizza is a classic small-town pizza restaurant in located in the unincorporated section of town called Socastee. It used to be a bit out of the way, but the restaurant is now perfectly positioned to attract the tens of thousands of new residents that make up the area's exploding population. Athens Pizza's menu has grown along with the restaurant's size. They've now added a wine list, pasta dishes and desserts to a menu that used to be almost entirely pizza and subs. There was already a small but growing weekend crowd in the restaurant, and we really felt a good vibe in the place. Cinco de Mayo may have been a disaster, but this Saturday evening looked to be starting out just fine. We started out with a classic pizzeria appetizer - their mozzarella cheese sticks. They came to us hot, crispy on the outside and gooey on the inside. The sticks were good and the sauce was even better, with nice chunks of garlic and a good, zesty tang to it. We made short work of both the sauce and the sticks. This evening, we both stuck with items from the restaurant's old menu. My wife ordered their Super Sub, which comes with turkey, roast beef, bacon and provolone cheese. It was a good sub, but she noticed one particular thing that she especially liked. The roast beef wasn't just plain sliced roast beef. Instead, her sub contained chunks cut off of a whole roast. She really enjoyed it. My own sub was their Italian sub. With two types of salami, ham, provolone cheese and Italian dressing, it was indeed a veritable taste of Italy. Like my bride's sub, it was large, the bread was nicely toasted and the vegetables had a nice crunch to them. Mine was a little messier than hers was, and I required a few more napkins. It was worth all those napkins. Just like last week, we didn't take any leftovers out of the restaurant with us. The difference, however, is that this week, our meals were really good. We made pigs of ourselves and ate everything. The only thing wrong with coming to Athens Pizza tonight is that everything we saw the wait staff carrying looked so good that we're going to have to come back and try a lot of their other menu items. Their pasta dinners looked especially mouth watering. Fortunately, they start delivery service as of June 1, so we'll be able to pig out without leaving home. |
